Heartburn In Pregnant WomenQ.The discussion about Heartburn In Pregnant Women got me wondering... What ADs (anti-depressants) are okay when pregnant and or nursing? Are there natural/herbal remedies that are safe to use? I have asked about a couple (Cipromil in particular - aussie brand) but my gp is hesitant to prescribe/recommend anything - she seems to think that many common ADs are untested or haven't been tested on women, with regards to pregnancy or nursing, or long term outcomes. Can anyone help me solve this problem.? A.Firstly, there will never be any testing on pregnant women! So none will ever be considered completely safe. What there is, though, is a body of evidence of women who have taken them while pregnant anyway, usually where the risk of not taking them outweighs the risk of taking them (I mentioned that in an earlier post today). I'm on Cipramil as well and its one of the newer in the class, so there is much less evidence of women taking it safely. Unfortunately I had dreadful heartburn on Paxil and Zoloft didn't work all that well for me, so neither of the "safer" ones are really an option. I weighed up the risks and decided to stay on Cipramil at the moment, though I am not yet pregnant and who knows, may be much better then and can stop. Your doc is right though that there hasn't been testing, though that may not mean you aren't better off on them. If you think you really need something, ask for a referal to a psychiatrist - they may be better informed and better able to help you come to a decision, but remember its your decision, not theres. There is a variety of information, unfortunately of variable quality, on the internet as well.
