Heartburn Jaw PainQ.I am 28. About three years ago I had a very stressful two weeks. I went to my GP who gave me an ECG and found nothing wrong, took a blood sample to test for an overactive thyroid and found nothing wrong and the whole thing was written down as stress (particularly given the history). Anyway, attacks continued, sometimes frighteningly strong, so I ended up going to a cardiac specialist (and having a 24hr ECG) to confirm no problems with my heart, which he did. I thought that this assurance would help cure my anxiety but somehow the attacks keep on coming (for nearly 3 years now). That is, I assume that it's the same old problem. Now, I don't so much get a racing heart as chronic indigestion (for over a week sometimes), weakness in the arms, and now, what I can only describe as indigestion of the jaw and neck (it's not pain, more like tightness). If I take heartburn remedies then it's clear that there is a lot of acid there (frankly, I bring up gas), but I can't understand why it seems so permanent. I know that if I go to a GP (which I did for the indigestion, and was prescribed Gaviscon), it will just be put down to stress, but the jaw pain worries me (ironically, the very syptoms of stress cause it) given the association with coronary problems. can anyone in the group help me with this remaining jaw pain please? A.it does sound like it was a stressful time. You did get through it, and that's good. Unfortunately, it sounds like it left you with a panic problem and anxiety disorder. Sure sounds like a panic attack. I had one in a restaurant once and scared the other patrons. It was right after I had my blood taken and I was congratulating myself about doing fine through that a little too soon. it all turned out okay, though. I felt better after nearly passing out in the lobby, and I got offered a free meal. I think that stomach problems are very common with anxiety disorder, along with chest pain and pressure. Gas, irritable bowel, dyspesia, etc. etc. I don't understand how anxiety creates gas, but it does seem to for lots of people- me included. My GP once said if antacids help, then that pretty much rules out more serious causes. This sounds really really familiar. You have a symptom, it could be not much, or it could be some horrible disease. Because you have anxiety, you jump right to the horrible disease. Because you have anxiety, telling yourself that you have made a too quick conclusion doesn't help. Telling yourself that 100 times before it was nothing doesn't really make you feel all better, either. For myself, I try to think about these things: if I can distract myself and I feel better, even momentarily, it's not anything but anxiety. If it's a "movable" problem, it's anxiety. If it's a problem that most people wouldn't get upset about, it's anxiety.
