Heartburn Medication And Pregnancy

Q.At my last two OB visits, when I mentioned I'd been having heartburn, my OB offered to prescribe me something to help it, but Tums was doing just fine for me. It isn't, now. I have heartburn (and maybe reflux???) bad enough that it actually makes me gag, and nothing over-the-counter is helping at all. And while I know and avoid some trigger foods, such as orange juice and barbecue sauce, it doesn't seem to be caused by any specific food or drink. So what meds would my OB likely prescribe, and how safe are those compared to plain old Tums? I really hate to think of trying to get through four more months of this, and this getting worse and worse. I'm really looking for other's experiences here, so when I go to my next OB appt, I have an idea of what to ask her for or ask to avoid as far as meds. Can anyone in the group help me please?

A.I had reflux so bad with my pregnancy that I started losing weight instead of gaining. My OB prescibed Zantac and it worked wonders - the heartburn disappeared literally within an hour of taking the first pill, and I was able to eat (and sleep) like normal again. It was a radical improvement from Tums, which by then was doing absolutely nothing. I didn't notice any adverse affects (me or the baby) while taking the medication. If you are nervous about meds, I have heard papaya (fresh and tablet form) helps some women. It might be worth a try.
