Heartburn Medication Side Effects

Q.I'm on Prednisone 40 mg/ 2X daily for 5 days for some asthma problems that can't be controlled with inhailed steriods and nebulizer treatments every 4 hours alone. Anyway, I've been on Prednisone quite a few times before (but when I was younger and didn't care about my physical appearance). Now, however, I'm worried that I'll gain weight, my face will swell, I'll get hairy everywhere, etc. Do you think any of those things can happen from the dose that I'm on? I've dropped my carbs very low (like an Atkins diet caliber), because I know that that helps with losing water weight. I've taken 3 (of 10) doses so far, and haven't really noticed any sort of side effects yet, aside from some heartburn and nausea (which I fully expected and I am treating with antacids 1 hour apart from the dose so as to not interfere with absorption). I'm worried because I'm hostessing a party on Saturday, and I'm afraid I'll be puffy, moody, hungry, hairy, and too bloated to fit into my dress! Can anyone in the group help me treat these side effects please? Prednisone for 5 days, what do you think about the side effects? Please help if you can!?

A.I'm sure none of those things will happen to you!I'm on a similar dose now, and have been many times before, and I've never experienced any of those things, especially where you're on it for only 5 days. I think it's a good idea that you're trying to prevent water retention, as water retention in women especially causes puffiness, and thus moodiness, which can cause us to want to eat! hehe The moodiness may be the only thing you experience in all seriousness, but just try to keep a positive outlook -- you're almost halfway through it!!! -- and remember that it's only the medication making you feel that way. I wouldn't worry. You should be fine. I am not a Doctor but have had allot of experience with medicine. You are on a short term dose that shouldn't cause the side effects you are worried about. Go ahead and take it as recommended and HAVE A GREAT WORRY FREE TIME AT YOUR PARTY. From what I have heard and read more and more Medical Professionals are opting to use the short term doses now because of the side effects of taking Prednisone for long periods of time.
