Heartburn Medications During Pregnancy

Q.I am 22 wks. pregnant and started experiencing very frequent daily heartburn. From past pregnancies I'm sure it is only gonna get worse. I can't find any up to date info. on Prilosec or Zantac use during pregnancy. All of the articles are from 98-01 and say these meds may not be safe. I was wondering if anyone had any different theories. I hate to take meds even when not preg., but I don't think I can suffer again like I have in the past. Basically, what I'm asking is are either of these medications safe for a pregnant woman to take and which is least harmful? My Dr. offered me a script of either which I declined. I'm guessing they can't be that bad if she offered. Also a list of side effects for me or the baby would be nice if you have them available Can anyone in the group help me please?

A.If you are interested in natural remedies, red raspberry leaf tea is wonderful for all women to use even while pregnant or nursing. It is also used for heartburn. Don't add any sugar or flavors though, as these can also contribute to heartburn. If your OB/GYN doctor is the one offering you the meds and not your regular doctor, I don't see an issue with it at all. I would just wait until it actually does become unbearable and Tums just don't work for it anymore before taking the other ones and even then sparingly. I experienced this during my fourth pregnancy and required removal of my gallbladder a month after delivery due to 50 small gallstones. Increased Estrogen due to pregnncy hormones was the cause of it If your doctor offered you these meds then obviously they are fairly safe to take. I take mylanta or tums for heartburn and the only side effect i get is my heartburn goes away. I would think either of these are good (especially if your doc says so) and i don't see any complications developing from this because heartburn meds are so mild that not enough of the harmful ingredients will reach the baby to do any damage. I take an inhaler on a daily basis and it's pretty much the same, so little of that harmful ingredient in my inhaler reaches the baby...it doesn't phase it at all. With my first, i actually took cold medicine once a day (nyquil and nitetime sudafed) and even then there were no side effects (except drowsiness)...you'll be perfectly fine.....trust your doctor.
