Heartburn PainQ.Anyone have any suggestions to this problem: For over one year now have had chest pain - mostly from excersize but stress can bring it on. Been to the ER (twice in bad shape) and kept for several hours and had nothing show up (only a slightly short QT wave which was deemed unimportant). Doctors started to diagnose Panic Disorder even though I had no symptoms except chest pain (and mostly from excersize). No fears, phobias, sweating, or anything even remotely related to anything I would consider "panic" in nature! Exchocardiogram - negative, Stress Thallium - negative, 24 hour Holter monitor - negative, Ultra Fast CT Topography (NEW pre-catherization test) - negative. I did have some esophageal spasms caught during a Bersnstein Test but that may or may not mean anything according to the doctors. I have NEVER been sick before (I'm 36) and this has changed my life dramatically! I'm following up on the PA diagnosis. I have gotten to either "bear" the pain or go for the tranquilizers - both of which don't seem to help a great deal. EXCERSIZE is the casue mainly! So here I sit. This time no excersize and no stress but crushing chest pain! Xanax seems to "hide" the problem but I'd swear this is Cardiac in nature. I realize doctors can only go on the results of these tests but can anyone think of any heart related procedure I haven't done or asked for (Catherization seems out of the question beacause all the other tests are negative!). can anyone in the group help me solve out the pain? A.I just found a new book that's highly worth recommending: "The Fire Inside". It's about gastroesophageal reflux disease, but very well answers this question along with others. The answer is: Ultimately you can't tell for sure without expensive tests. It says something like: "If you ignore heart attack pain you will surely die, but if you ignore heartburn pain you will simply wish you were dead." This book is is apparently the first work of its kind. I learned a lot from it about how common heartburn is, how varied are its causes and symptoms, and what to do about it. Also that the field is rapidly changing, with new information and drugs becoming available in the last 5-15 years.
