Heartburn Reflux

Q.I take nexium for reflux once a day, still have reflux, but no acid taste, no heartburn.? I feel stomach contents coming back up my esosphogus but not a bitter taste or an acid taste. I burp a lot and have a gurgling sound in my throat especially when I swallow. This has been going on for about a year. I just had an endoscopy test about 10 months ago, doctor said I had a little reflux and a small hiatal hernia. Do I need another endoscopy or should I just stick with the meds and ride it out?

A.Nexium is actually an drug to switch off acid production in your tum, not really anti reflux drug. The hernia cause you to have reflux and the acid does damage to your esophagus, which is not designed (like the stomach) to handle strong acids. That is why people with reflux also complains about heartburn. If you still have reflux and it is bothering you, you can ask your doc to write you up for a pro-kinetic (drug that helps with emptying the tummy quicker) something like metaclopramide. You can try that, if that does not give you satisfactory relief you can opt to have surgery to fix the problem. It is done via keyhole surgery these days, not such a big op as it used to be You need to talk with your dr. and see if he can try you on another med.....like Aciphex or Prilosec. Each work in a different way and may help you better. Don't stop taking your med without talking to your dr and I don't think I would waste another few hundred on an endoscopy until I'd tried every other ave.
