Heartburn Relief During Pregnancy

Q.Any ideas for really bad heartburn? With my first pregnancy I had to sleep sitting up and took anatacids every night but it still kept me awake. I was exhausted by the birth. It is starting again now at 21 weeks and I am really stressed about it. Has anyone else had it this badly, could it be a hernia perhaps? What about Zantac (Ranitidine) it worked for me but I was worried about taking it because it is category B. I will ask my midwife as well. Can anyone help me find out the heartburn relief during pregnancy?

A.My heartburn was so bad during my pregnancy that I ended up in the care of a gastroenterologist. My OB started me out with Tums, but I was going thru them at a rate of about 6 every 2 hours and they weren't helping. They switched me to Zantac, 2x per day, and that didn't help. Then I switched to Tagamet, that didn't help. Finally went to see the gastroenterologist and he switched me back to Zantac, but 4x per day and an a mostly liquid and almost no fiber diet, THAT finally helped (but I didn't get that relief until I was about 34 weeks pregnant). The gastroenterologist told me that Zantac is safe for pregnant women.
