Heartburn Remedies For Pregnant Women

Q.I'm having the worst heartburn Ive ever had, i am finding it hard to take the remedies that you can buy? because i still feel sick 24/7 . i was awake most of last night with it and its starting to really get me down, does anyone have any idea what i can do to make it easier to cope with? im trying to drink milk but again coz im still feeling sick most of the day its not easy to drink alot of milk. this is my 5th baby im 20weeks and only ever got heartburn in the last few weeks with the others. Can anyone in the group help me please?

A.Yogurt is easier to digest than milk and might not require as much. Buy plain. Just eat a bit of the plain yogurt (it really will help as much as over-the-counter heartburn remedies and is way better and SAFER) and follow the other suggestions (like eating small meals frequently, crackers, propping yourself up with pillows). If you're really queasy don't read the rest of my answer. But suggestions for experimentation... you might sweeten the yogurt with maple syrup or honey. If you can stomach it, you could add any kind of fruit (bananas are nice and sweet, or apples, strawberries, whatever you crave). Use jam or jelly if you'd rather Or you can go the other way and add a bit of sea salt to taste, I think Indian recipes do that sometimes. If you decide to go the salty/savoury route you can try adding some onion powder or dried onions, garlic. Other herbs might be nice too, but if you want to be cautious check with your doctor or midwife before using (some, like sage, aren't recommended during pregnancy, others are fine after the first trimester). Consider other dairy, organic if possible (easier to digest and better for you and baby in my opinion). Cottage cheese, cream cheese, havarti. I'd avoid brie and old cheese, but that's just me! .
