Heartburn Shoulder Pain

Q.For about a week or so, I've been having some pain just under my left shoulder blade. I am in front of the computer for like 7 hours a day, so I don't know if this is from my sitting position or is it GERD related? I've read that back pain is a common symptom for GERD (and everything else in God's green earth). Is there anything to be concerned about at this point? I have a visit with my GI doc in March, can I wait until them to discuss this with him?

A.I too was spending a long time in front of the computer and was having chest pains with the occasional shoulder twinge. I went to my doctor, who thought that it was due to tension in the back. She poked me in the back and I nearly shot into the air. I was concerned because I have heart failure (as well as GERD and Crohn's) and thought that it was due to progression in that area. If you have someone you trust ask them to gently explore your back to see whether or not you have muscle tension (they must not press on the spinal cord). You don't have to be lying down for this. Are you left handed and it is the mouse that is the root of the problem? I have taught myself to use my mouse both right and left handed to take some of the strain off my right hand and arm. A few tips - if the telephone rings stand up to answer it and walk around. Place your telephone in a remote part of your desk so that you have to stretch and stand up to reach it and then you will build in a bit of exercise/change in posture automatically. Try doing some stretching every half an hour or so http://www.calwic.org/docs/wwt/desk_workout.pdf . Make sure that you are looking across and slightly down at the screen so that the head and neck posture is correct http://www.openerg.com/dse/ideal.html. Try moving around in your seat - half an hour sitting forward with a straight back, half an hour firmly wedged in the chair. This is well worth a read http://www.openerg.com/dse/symptoms.html and here are a few other articles http://gislounge.com/features/aa030303a.shtml http://www.back-shop.com/posture.htm
