Heartburn Upper Back Pain

Q.I've been asked to write an article for a newsletter which I sometimes contribute to, for people with back pain. They want me to write about pregnancy and back pain (I've had the pregnancy for 38 weeks, and the back pain for 10 yrs). So I'd like to know how you all dealt with any back pain you had during those all important 9 months. What techniques did you use to cope with it? Ice? Heat? Exercise - if so what kind? Relaxation? I'd really like to find out what you think worked best and why so can anyone in the group help me out with this upper back pain please?

A.I find my bachache comes on when I've 'done too much' (lower back pain that is). I am a keen gardener and with soooo much lovely weather have been trying to get ahead of myself - thank goodness for a little rain!! Also there's lots of decorating to do and, as I'm ground bound (no ladder work to do cool jobs like wallpapering) I get all the minky jobs like sanding woodwork. You tend to think you're fine cos you're on your hands a knees but, boy does it ache when you get up. I had a lot of upper back pain at about 12 - 16 weeks but GP thinks it was just because I was learning a new way to stand and being over protective about the space the bump needed. That has subsided now. Following the upper pain 'crisis' I drafted in 7 pillows, 2 on top of each other but staggered for my midriff (sp?) and 5 for my head and shoulders. This helped tremendously. It also helps now when I've 'done too much' and like Sarah Lee I have rest on my left side. Before the pillows my left hip/back area was painful due to the constant pressure - sorted now though. As an aside, the pillows also helped relieve the excess mucous that seems to build up at night (like having a permanent cold) and latterly eases that not-quite-heartburn-but-very-escaped-gastric-juice feeling.
