Heartburn With Back Pain

Q.Does anyone know how common it is for a 23 year old woman to suffer with heartburn after every meal especially with back pain. I had it last year for a few months in the summer and I also had pains in my hands. Two months ago it came back and feels even worse. I'm on medication now for it, rather than tums, rennie etc which didn't do a single thing for me. I'm due for some tests soon, but I just want to know how many other young fit people suffer with it? Can anyone in the group help me please?

A.It sounds a bit like you have a hiatus hernia or acid reflux, both of which can be treated. If it is the hernia it is caused by the protrusion of the upper part of the stomach into the thorax through a tear or weakness in the diaphragm. That sounds really bad, but its a really common problem. You couldn't be pregnant could you? The symptoms you describe are also common in pregnancy too? i get it, but i know what sort of foods bring it on for me too and sometimes im my own worst enemy by eating said foods! i find that maalox helps, you can get it from the pharmacy, ask for it at the counter, it really helps me out This can be quite a common thing. Hopefully when you have the investigations it will help. Till then try to keep of spicy foods and eat slowly and concously as this will often help
