Home Cure For Heartburn

Q.I am about 20 lbs overweight (190, would like to be 170) I workout at karate and have tight stomach muscles. This pressure is leading to reflux. (long story not included) Need some clues about what foods to pursue to keep the stomach acidity down. I know i need to avoid all my favourites now. Did a quick web search on Macrobiotics but come up with commercial sites. I know *some* of the theory behind food balancing in that style and thought it would be a good place to start. So can anyone in the group help me find out the home cure for heartburn please?

A.I have GERD (a fancy name for a serious Acid reflux problem). According to my GI's orders, I had to primiarily cut out (or at least back on) tomatoes, garlic, onions and acidic fruit & juices - especially grapefruit. I also do not eat while lying on the couch anymore and I sit upright for at least two hours after eating. I also lifted the head of my bed about three inches higher than my feet. Finally, I have been taking Prilosec everyday which has proven to be extremely helpful for me. I have nothing to add to the great suggestions Ilene made, except to mention a home cure I've found helpful when the acid kicks up: ginger. Some people eat the pickled kind; I usually eat a few pieces of crystalized ginger, and it found that it helps settle my stomach and reduce nausea when I've got a bad case of acid reflux.
