Cure acid reflux when it has begun

Q.How to cure acid reflux when it has begun? I've looked around looking for solutions, but the problem is when it happens it feels pretty bad and im not able to swallow...barely swallowing my own saliva I have not tried the baking soda or vinegar yet...and im not sure if i will be able to when the time comes

A.Acid reflux can be caused by an excess in acid production in your stomach, excessive intake of acidic food in your diet or an increase in pressure from your belly (pregnancy or, in males, just gaining weight around the midline) While losing weight can often be beneficial, the most immediate answer to your question is medication. Medicines available over the counter can reduce your production of acid such as Prevacid or Zantac but others can neutralize acids like alka seltzer or baking soda, if you don't mind the taste. All of that being said, I am concerned about your complaint that you are not able to swallow. If you mean, you are disgusted with the taste and do not wish to swallow, then that is less concerning. If you really are stating that you are having trouble swallowing, that may be a sign of esophageal spasm and while also painful, this requires an entirely different treatment and is absolutely something for which you should seek your doctor's advice. Avoiding certain foods often helps; avoid acidic foods like tomato and citrus products. Caffeine products (coffee, etc.) can make it worse, too. However, since you indicate swallowing problems, i would suggest that you make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible. There is a chance that it might not be acid reflux, but some other problem, so it would be better to be on the safe side and let a doctor check you. Prescription meds for acid reflux (GERD) work well for many of us, but you need to have the doctor find out why swallowing is so difficult for you.
