Infant Acid Reflux Symptoms

Q.My 9 week old DD has bad infant acid reflux for which she takes Zantac and Carafate. She had two incidents where she spit up blood. Anyway, she also has delayed emptying and has always made stool diapers pretty well. When she was put on the medication the doctor said if she got constipated to give her some apple juice. (Discomfort from trying to pass stool or no stool for 2 days) Well the few times that she went to the second day, we gave her apple juice and within 3 - 4 hours, we had a stool diaper. This past week, she got her first vaccinations on Thursday. She did not have a stool on Wednesday and then again on Thursday, so towards Thursday evening, we gave her some apple juice. Nothing. Friday we gave her apple juice twice and still nothing. I called the Pediatrician today and they said that with breastfed babies it is not necessarily abnormal yet as they can go up to 7 days without a stool. She is generally happy and smiley a good portion of the day, etc. Anyway they said we could add a tablespoon of Dark Caro Syrup once a day. So today, we gave her apple juice once with a tablespoon of Dark Caro Syrup in it and still no stool. When she is waking up she always looks as though she is trying to make a diaper but then she looks in to mine and DH's eyes and smiles and laughs, etc. Does anyone have any suggestions and or advice...Should I be worried more/less? Is there something I am overlooking? should be doing? Can anyone in the group help me please? Are these the symptoms of acid reflux in infants.?

A.I wouldn't worry about it or give her ANYTHING but breastmilk. Stop the syrup and the juice, as they most likely aren't doing her any good. Babies this age will sometimes go a week without pooping and it's perfectly normal. Just smile and coo back and let her be. She is only truly constipated if when she does go, it's hard little pellets with little or no water. The frequency of the poo doesn't define constipation. As babies get older their bodies are able to digest and use most of the breast milk that they take in, so it can take up to a week to build up enough waste in their bowels for them to have to empty them. With my first dd she went once a week and when it did happen watch out. Laundry was not washed until after that day.
