Is Heartburn A Symptom Of Pregnancy

Q.I am in my 32nd week of pregnancy and have experienced heartburn so severe that the acid actually comes up into my throat/mouth and chokes me for a minute. This has only happened a couple of times when I was sleeping. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what can you do about it? Is it anything to worry about?

A.I'm only 18 weeks and haven't experienced heartburn too much yet. However, a while back I saw a segment on "Good Morning America" about the "ailments" of pregnancy and what you could to do alleviate them. (I took notes as I'm a freak about the possibility of having a severe or uncomfortable problem and not being able to doing something about it) anyway, they reported that for hearburn the best thing to take --- and YES it's safe, is Gavascon. I'm not sure if I'm spelling it right but I believe it's right. I'm not sure if your'e into taking anything, but if I get heartburn real bad, I'm going to take it. Heartburn is a common symptom of pregnancy and as the uterus begins to displace the other organs you add that to the slowing of digestion from pregnancy hormones. Here are some suggestions: 1) AVoid spicy or offending foods 2) Stay upright for at least an hour after eating 3) You can drink 8 oz of milk and 1 Tablespoon of honey to help 4) SOme antacids are okay, ask your practitioner which s/he chooses 5) Eat smaller, more frequent meals. 6) Avoid grease.
