Heartburn medication can be used if you are pregnant

Q.What heartburn medication can be used if you are pregnant? I have such painful heartburn. I usually take Zantac, but am afraid to take if I'm pregant. What can I take, chewables don't cut it for me!!

A.Im 35wks and have been waking up at night vomiting pure acid and ive started using Zantac.I looked it up on the web and it said no adverse effects have been reported but then not to take it in the first trimester so it was pretty conflicting.So im gonna try to hold out til my doctors appt next monday.Or maybe call....ill let you know if i find out first Mylanta, Maalox, Tums, and Zantac 75 is what it says on the sheet my doctor gave me (after 13 weeks). Prilosec OTC is safe, my doc recommended it for me, but be sure to check with your doc first. Different docs like different meds. Maalox/ Mylanta seems to work better than tums for breakthrough heartburn. Hormones released during pregnancy allow the softening of the sphincter between the esophagus and stomach. This lets stomach acids back up into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation. This may also occur in the latter months of pregnancy as your baby pushes all of your organs upward. Suggestions: Eat smaller, more frequent meals Remain upright for an hour after eating, lying down can irritate the problem Eating yogurt or drinking milk can help Avoid spicy or greasy foods Try a tablespoon of honey in a glass of warm milk
