Natural Remedies For Acid Reflux In InfantsQ.I keep reading on newsgroups that the reccomendation is now to start solids at six months rather than four. When I had my first som two and a half years ago I had only heard four months. I have a really big boy who is starting to demand feeds more and more often. He's coming up for four months and the baby nurse we see for his Well baby checks suggested solids at four months as did our GP. Why are people now saying six months? All the books/websites I have found say 4 months. What are the possible risks of starting solids at four months? Can anyone help me find out the natural remedies for acid reflux in infants? A.Well when my kids were babies, (they are 11, 8 and 7) the recommendation was to start at four months. I was pretty religous about that since I understood very well that babies digestive systems took some time to mature. I think the biggest reason that the recommendation is to wait until six months, is the rise of allergies in children. If you have any allergies in your family (even hayfever) then you probably should be cautious about starting solids. To me, my biggest factor in starting solids is if the baby is ready. What kinds of signs is your baby showing? Has he lost his tongue thrust? Can he sit up unassisted? Below is what a doctor has to say about feeding solids at an early age: "I know that the experts told you to start feeding your babies cereal after a few weeks of life; and you followed their advice because you loved your children. Now we know that an infant's gut is not ready for solid foods until around six months of age. If you start a food too early, he is much more likely to become allergic to it. This can result in damage to the intestines, weight loss, blood in the stool, and malnutrition. You might argue, "Well, my kids started solid foods at three weeks, and they turned out just fine." The truth is, very few adults have perfectly working digestive tracts. Just look at all the commercials for heartburn remedies and stool softeners... "ever feel gassy and bloated after a meal?"
