Otc Heartburn Medication

Q.I am 39 weeks pregnant and I have the worst heartburn ever. I have it so bad that it causes me to throw up and I have bad sharp chest pains. I have tried Tums and some of the other over the counter medication that my doc said I could but nothing is helping. Please what is going on and how can I stop it?

A.Did he tell you to try Prilosec OTC? Heartburn's very normal in pregnancy but unfortunately, there's not a lot you can take. Luckily, you're 39 wks, so you're almost done! I hear you, though. I have GERD (basically chronic heartburn) and my pregnancies were tough with it. One thing that helps is to constantly have something on your stomach. It'll keep the acid down.Try eating more slowly and then don't lie down afterward (if you are). Also try to watch the kinds of food you eat so you can get an idea of what may trigger heartburn so you can avoid them or eat them sparingly i also think you should try this: Prilosec is pregnancy category C, and while it is *unlikely* to cause problems this late in pregnancy I wouldn't risk it. Pepcid is pregnancy category B which is safe. If you decide to take OTC medications talk to a pharmacist. They know far more than most doctors.
