Persistent Heartburn

Q.I got one today that said that "persistent heartburn during the last trimester that does not respond to treatment or diet changes can be a sign of toxemia or preeclampsia. Check with your medical practitioner". Has anyone heard of this before? I had heartburn all the time with my first two kids, and I did develop preeclampsia with my first. I have been having all kinds of stomach pains lately: heartburn, reflux, nausea, you name it. Nothing helps. Not TUMS, eating small meals, sleeping position, nothing. I assumed that it was a normal part of being 35 weeks pregnant. Should I call my doctor? I wasn't worried until I read the silly booklet! Is this true because I am still confused about this?

A.I had *horrible* heartburn that didn't respond to anything with both my pregnancies. I flirted with pre-eclampsia the first time around, but didn't have it. The second time I didn't have it either, though there was a slight rise in BP, but the heartburn was even worse. Obviously, anecdotal evidence doesn't mean a whole lot, but for whatever it's worth.. I don't know about this in particular, but I've done a lot of reading about pre-eclampsia and haven't seen anything that suggests this is any sort of reliable indicator. Frankly, I'm not even sure how you'd go about proving this, given that intractable heartburn is *so* common in late pregnancy! Sure, probably almost everyone who has pre-eclampsia has heartburn, but so does everyone else. And even if they have disproportionately more heartburn, there's likely some other factor contributing to both. I can't imagine you should be worried with no other symptoms.
