Prevent Acid Reflux

Q.Can one take Alka Seltzer BEFORE heartburn symptoms to prevent them? eg before sleep? My question relates specifically to taking it as a preventive action before going to bed (Following occasional heavy meal at evening) rather than waking up with heartburn and taking it then. So can anyone in the group help me please?

A.The best cure is always prevention. Don't eat spicy or fatty foods withing a couple of hours of bed time. Barring that, you can use Alka Seltzer before going to bed. My own experience is with famotidine (Pepsid). This is an acid reducer. It reduces the amount of acid that your stomach makes. This targets the problem *before* it begins. It provides relief from heartburn and reflux. Two things that I've personally had lots of trouble with. I take a 10mg pill in the morning and one at night. They are very tiny and easy to swallow. I've not had any trouble since I started the regimen. Heartburn must be treated as a serious problem. Going without treatment for a long time can result in upper GI cancer.
