Baby & heartburn

Q.can a 7week old have heartburn? My son has EVERY symptom of acid reflux, but doesnt spit up alot and never vomits.. he wakes up from a nap in screaming Pain... He doesnt have the symptoms all the time.. how can i help?im calling his doc. monday, but i'd rather hear from people with experince.. and what kind of formula would help with heartburn? since he doesnt have trouble with spitting up, Enfamil A.R wont help.. Hes not allergic to cows milk, so not Soy.. Nutramigen is a little too expensive.. any others?

A.You will need to watch for the symptoms of colic in any age, and it can continue in older infants, despite the theory that it stops at a cerain age. Usually red-faced crying, or diahhrea, seeming very tense while crying, irritability, gas, or any of the above could indicate colic. Babies become very irritable with colic, and sometimes pediatricians don't always diagnose it, (as with my son). When I finally got to our third child (the first two were breastfed and that does not necessarily prevent colic or stomach problems, esp. if you drink a lot of mil\k), I tried this: 1 part cow's milk based baby formula, 1 part soy formula (I used Similac). Only one can contain iron, as too much iron can cause stomach upset in infants. Mix these, and feed the baby with his back sitting upright, and his head tipped slightly back. This alleviates air bubbles from being trapped while he is feeding. Also, if your baby has diahhrea, he is in discomfort. If you are breastfeeding, you may be eating something that is upsetting his stomach, especially milk. If you are giving him baby vitamins, the iron may be irritating his stomach. If he has a bad diaper rash, when he urinates it will sting his skin, and he will cry due to that. In that case, ask the doctor to prescribe Nystatin cream. It works wonders (an antifungal - candida). How, by the way, do you know your baby of only seven weeks of age is not sensitive to cow's milk? Unless you have had him allergy tested, it would be very difficult to tell this, and I would not go by a doctor telling you, unless your baby has had specific testing.
