The Cause Of Heartburn

Q.Bad Heartburn and 22 weeks pregnant..Is this normal? I am 22 weeks pregnant with my first and recently i started to get this bad heartburn that last for hours, it is really irritating, I recently got off of flintstones, and tried taking the regular prenatals again, they are not bothering now that i am further along, but could they be causing the heartburn? What can i do to make it subside? It is really bothersome. Can anyone in the group help me please?

A.Thats very normal. It just happens to some pregnant women. The old wives tale says this means your baby is going to have a lot of hair. Recent studies suggest there may be some element of truth to this myth, but nothing definitive has been proven because there are too many variables that cause heartburn in pregnant women. I take papaya enzymes for heart burn. Its like an organic variation of Tums. My doctor okayed Tums as well. It's pretty normal and has more to do with your stomach getting squished than anything else. You can take tums, you can sleep a little propped up, you can try identifying particularly problematic food...I was chomping down so many tums my doc finally gave me a prescription for protonix (considered safe in pregnancy) - and that's worked really well.
