What Are The Symptoms Of Acid Reflux

Q.Are these strange symptoms? What is the condition called? Swallowing air and heartburn during sleep.? Some nights (when it is occuring, it is usually 2 or 3 nights in a row), I am woken up by discomfort. I cough, gasp, and belch. By the time I am conscious I find a stomach full of air and my esophogus is burning up. Usually it is very hard to go back to sleep because of the discomfort in my throat. So can anyone in the group help me please?

A.You could have GERD. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease. You may have to change your dietary habits such as no spicy foods, alcohol, beans etc. And if it is severe you will be put on medication such as nexium, or protonix. Over the counter meds that you can look into are antiacids such as tagament, zantac and pepcid. Some tips are to eat at least 4 hours before bed and do not lay completely flat after eating. Try to sleep elevated with 2-3 pillows which decreases the burning feeling you are most likely suffering from GERD and the way you are telling the story it seems like it has been going on for a while, acid reflux has damaged you esophagus lining, you should immediately start taking anti-acids that you can get OTC (for example prilosec OTC, zantac), stop eating spicy food, dont eat anything when its close to ur bedtime, sleep @ 30 degree angle(head side of the bed raised @30 degree angle), use cpl of pillows or get one of those beds that can adjust itself so you can raise the bed and keep the acid from getting into esophagus, and make an appointment with a gastrontologist ASAP get an endoscopy and see whats exactly going on before its too late
