What Causes Acid Reflux

Q.When I go running or jump rope, I get acid reflux very badly. My doctor has told me that I have GERD and I follow the guidelines of what to eat and I'm fine mostly, but I still get the acid when I run or do anything "bouncy" like intense step aerobics. I love to work out, and my doctor says to take tums before I work out or bike or do something different which sometimes helps. This is fine, but I plan to run anyway. I really need to vary my workouts or I "slip". Does anyone have any suggestions beyond tums that have helped them with this? Or may be this is what causes acid reflux?
