What Causes Heartburn

Q.I am 57 and for 3 years have been told my prostate is slightly enlarged but annual PS checks have given good results. For a year or so I had occasional rectal bleeding and a lot of heartburn. Because I was worried, last year I had a colonoscopy and a gastroscopy; two small polyps were removed and I was put on a pill for oesophagitis for two months but all was otherwise fine. The pill cured the heartburn, which I now have only occasionally and mildly. I'm in good health normally but recently had a short bout of diarrhoea presumably from food poisoning and with this was a lot of rectal bleeding. Since the diarrhoea stopped I've had more bleeding than before. I haven't had a regular doctor since my last doctor died so I can't easily get a check up. I am a highly stressed person, if that is relevant. so can anyone in the group help me find out what causes heartburn in this case?
