What To Take For Heartburn When PregnantQ.I am having a pregnancy problem that I'm hoping some of you can counsel me about. I've been experiencing very uncomfortable heartburn every night. As soon as I lie down to sleep, it begins. My response is to take a Tums. Earlier, I was hesitant to take these because of all the injunctions against taking drugs during pregnancy. However, my ob and other people think the Tums are OK, plus it's gotten to the point where I cold not sleep without them. Now, even with taking them, I am waking up every hour or so (and the baby isn't even born yet!) with repeated episodes. Sitting up does not seem to help much. Actually, the only thing which has helped is waiting until about 5:00 am. Only then can I finally sleep uninterrupted. Often, I can sleep late (I'm not currently working), but obviously this situation is not ideal. My ob has recommended Mylanta. This seems like a serious step up from Tums, but I am getting desperate. Any comments about taking Mylanta? Has anyone else had this problem? By the way, I've been having heartburn since about month 5-- morning sickness lasted until month 4 and recently returned! I'm just hoping the baby won't have colic. (Currently I'm at 34 weeks.) So can anyone here help me find out what to take for heartburn when pregnant? A.My wife had the same heartburn problem when she was pregnant. She had the same hesitancy towards taking Mylanta. Her ob and I told her that it was unnecessary. Mylanta and other drugs like it are very mild and basically natural. I notice no side effects when I take them. My wife gave in and took Mylanta (or Pepto Bismol or whatever) and she was happy she did. I take these medicines as soon as I have symptoms. They work fast, and as I've said, I feel no side effects. Without medicine, the heartburn can go on for half a day or a day. While waiting for the medicine to take effect, try lying on your back with your knees up. It helps me.
